Properties of Titanium Grade 2

As a commercially pure titanium alloy, Grade 2 contains a minimum of 99% titanium with slight variations in oxygen and iron content. These small differences in chemical composition allow Grade 2 to achieve optimal strength and ductility for industrial use, surpassing stainless steel in corrosion resistance in many environments.

Titanium Grade 2’s corrosion resistance is due to its stable, protective oxide film, which forms in the presence of oxygen. This natural barrier makes Grade 2 highly resistant to oxidizing, neutral, and mildly reducing environments, as well as seawater, chlorides, and a range of industrial acids. Its durability against chlorides and industrial gases makes it ideal for challenging environments, from marine atmospheres to exposure to nitric and chromic acids in chemical processes.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Titanium Grade 2 can be easily cold-formed, machined, welded, and effectively hot-worked. For hot work, Grade 2 performs best between 400°F and 600°F.

Stress-relieving processes involve heating the alloy to temperatures between 900°F and 1100°F, followed by slow or forced air cooling. Annealing, an essential step for achieving ductility, requires heating between 1200°F and 1400°F.

When it comes to welding, inert gas shielding is necessary to avoid embrittlement due to oxygen absorption. MIG and TIG welding are preferred methods, often utilizing an argon-helium gas mixture for optimum results. Preheat or post-heat treatments are normally not needed, which simplifies the welding process.

Additionally, Grade 2’s maintains good impact properties at low temperatures. The ASME BPVC allows it to be used down to -75°F.  It can be used in continuous service at temperatures up 800°F and in intermittent service up to 1000°F.
